Advisory desk
Mali
The State Department's highest advisory. It is issued when there is a greater likelihood of life-threatening risk, and it means the U.S. government may have very limited ability to help you while you are there.
What it means for a trip
- Most travel insurance will not pay out on a trip taken against a Level 4 advisory — check the wording before you assume you're covered.
- Some tour operators, cruise lines and hotels suspend service or waive change fees when a destination reaches Level 4.
- Consular assistance may be unavailable, and evacuation is your own responsibility and expense.
Thinking about going anyway?
Advisories are a blunt instrument — one region can drag a whole country's rating down. I'll tell you honestly whether a trip still makes sense, which areas to leave off the map, and what your insurance actually covers. Planning with me is complimentary.
